What We Do
AVAVA Systems provides high-quality, sustainable homes that are rapidly assembled in 4-6 weeks. We simplify home building at every step, from design to installation.
6 big ideas to create 100,000
quality,
sustainable
homes

that the average
person can afford
RESOURCE(FUL) CONSERVATION
fig. 1. building systems
AVAVA is committed to the creation of healthy, sustainable homes. Our all-electric system can easily be configured for off-the-grid living, and we build with only low-VOC materials. Quality materials with a low carbon footprint is part of our strategy, and we go one step further to build resource conservation into the design:

  • The moment frame reduces concrete required for a foundation by 60%, and wood volume for a frame by 40%. Concrete is responsible for 7% of global CO2 production.

  • Our high-performance envelope (wall, ceiling and windows) greatly reduces the energy needed to heat and cool the home. A small solar system can make an AVAVA home net zero.

  • All building components are made to be recycled or refurbished.

    HACK TRADITIONAL CONSTRUCTION
    fig. 2. joist lock
We simplify the building process and make results consistent by inventing new ways of using common construction materials:

    JOIST LOCK
Our patented joist lock connection creates a completely rigid frame out of engineered lumber and just sixteen bolts—no glue, no nails.

    NO-SHEAR SIPs (Structural Insulated Panel)
We are innovating a new kind of SIP panel, one that is lighter and more durable. These panels don't’ need plywood, our frame provides all the shear strength needed.

    ADJUSTABLE FOUNDATION
Our frame integrates with a pier and rod foundation that reduces concrete use by 60% and can be adjusted if settling occurs.
    x
    FLATPACK
    fig. 3. flatpack delivery
AVAVA micro-homes arrive on a truck in ready-to-assemble components. The entire home can be built in 4-6 weeks depending on finishes—with zero construction waste. In addition to being fast and convenient, our flatpack system:

  • Is the only prefab system that can fit through tight spaces to infill restricting sites or backyards

  • Does not require advanced construction skills to assemble

  • Allows for dis-assembly and relocation of entire homes
  • x
    CREATE A PRODUCT NETWORK
    fig. 4. robotic fabrication
Residential homes are constructed in fundamentally the same way as they were 100 years ago. All other industries—including automotive, electronics, even furniture—have experienced leaps in production efficiency by leveraging digital design tools and mechanized manufacturing. AVAVA has a plan to bring home construction into the 21st century.

  • Factory production of homes creates consistent results while driving down costs, and reduces the chance of worker-related injury.

  • We acquire high quality, sustainably sourced materials at bulk pricing.

  • Increases labor efficiency and provides jobs for multiple skill sets.
  • x
    RADICAL ADAPTABLILITY
    fig. 5. after Stewart Band's 6S concept
Stewart Brand described buildings as having 6 functional systems, all with their own performative requirements and effective lifespans. We create a product with a nearly unlimited lifespan by allowing the building to be efficiently serviced and upgraded whenever necessary.

Buckminster Fuller coined the term ephemeralization: the ability to do “more and more with less and less.”

We bring these concepts together by isolating building systems and choosing strategies that use the least amount of resources to do the most amount of work.

Our approach is meant for the long term. AVAVA products can be upgraded or serviced as materials change, technology improves, and parts reach the end of their useful lifespan.
    x
    SCALE
    fig. 6. AVAVA frame
Our approach to design, building and the tools we invent can be applied in any context or scale:

  • We provide a tool for architects to build any number of designs—we can achieve wide openings and cantilevers at lower cost—and with wood instead of steel.

  • Acquiring permits for 20 individual micro-homes can take ⅓ the time of as getting a single 20 unit apartment building permitted in many urban jurisdictions.

  • Our minimal need for foundation footprints and our flatpack delivery system makes building on challenging sites and reaching remote locations much more simple and efficient.

  • Our minimal need for expensive and hard-to-find specialized construction labor makes building in urban areas faster and less expensive.

    LET US KNOW
    FAST.
We can build homes ten times faster than standard construction methods.
    SIMPLE.
To innovate is to simplify. Our system makes it easy to get great results.
    CONSCIOUS.
From eliminating waste to research in rapid delivery of net zero housing, we have a new vision for creating living spaces.
"If we keep building using the technology of today, it will be nearly impossible to solve the economic and environmental challenges of tomorrow."

    Benjamin Kimmich
    CEO

Benjamin leads the team at AVAVA Systems. He believes that high-quality affordable housing can and should be produced at scale in the context of long-term social, economic, and technological forces. Benjamin is a licensed general contractor and LEED AP with over 12 years of experience in construction and real estate development. He owns a family run construction company that completed 3 million dollars of projects in 2016.

    David A. Wilson, P.E.
    COO

David is a co-inventor of the patented frame used in Britespace homes, and oversees operations and engineering of the AVAVA Britespace structure and supply chain. A graduate of UC Berkeley, he has over 30 years of experience in civil and structural engineering, with projects ranging from residential to large scale public works structures. David specializes in seismic design and engineering with a deep understanding of engineered wood products used in modern construction.

    Patricia Carpentieri, AIA
    Director of Product Design

Patricia leads the architectural vision and development of AVAVA Systems housing products. A registered architect with over 25 years experience in California, her background includes environmental planning and design as well as working closely with owners building their own homes. Her designs emphasize beautifully integrating architecture with the surrounding context to create spaces that are exciting to live and work in.

    Nick Buccelli
    Creative Director

Nick leads the effort to develop and present an integrated identity at AVAVA Systems, bridging product design and development with customer experience. He received a Masters in Architecture from UC Berkeley, and has worked at many scales in design, ranging from high rise towers and mixed-use housing projects to urban micro gardens, furniture, and print and digital media publications.

    Building Systems

AVAVA Systems is committed to minimizing the carbon footprint of Britespace homes. We design and engineer our construction system to significantly alleviate construction waste, and use life-cycle analysis to evaluate the impact of our finish material selections.

We partner with a solar provider to offer a solar power system as a standard out-of-the-box option, with zero initial cost and lower monthly payments than with the grid alone, and select our building systems and appliances to be low impact, or even work off-grid. Please let us know if you would like more information about how to make this possible.
